Fall Protection
On commercial buildings with low-sloped
roofs, skylights are considered a hole in the roof. The skylight
needs fall protection to protect workers on the roof.. As a
building owner you need to be concerned. You employ service
companys to do work on roof top equipment, the roof itself, signs,
lighting… These companys most of the time will not install fall
protection.
Unless you make sure they set up temporary
fall protection around every skylight they walk by getting to the
item they are their to service, this will not be done. 99.99% of
the time nothing will happen. It only takes one slip or trip and a
worker goes through the skylight and is injured.
You can protect the skylights with screens
that are attached to the skylight frame. They do not void any
roofing manufacturers warranty.

Getting a survey of your roofs skylight
layout and the paths of your servicemens paths to the units they
maintain will help planning a budget. The skylights can have the
fall protection installed according to the most traveled areas of
the roof.
Preventive maintenance is always preferable
to crisis management.
